Where Two Rivers Meet

By Heather Kvasnak

Where Two Rivers Meet

Slowly coasting down a quiet, winding gravel road

Sun shines through

Dappling lush green leaves

Soft breezes carry melodies of dainty hermit thrush and joyful red robin

Passing under the trestle

The density of life falls away, ease sets in

The symphony of summer sounds and smells begin

Flip flops, screen doors, humming honey bees

Children run free leaving the sweet scent of sunscreen in their wake

Fresh cut grass and the first charcoal starts to burn

On the river bank a dog gleefully jumps into the water emerging in a shower of water droplets, shaking them into the air

Downstream a fisherman casts, a slow curl of pipe smoke floats into the air above him, the spicy scent of tobacco

Crickets chirp announcing the arrival of early evening, everything rose tinted as the sun sets

As the sky changes into her midnight blue cape with a million glittering stars

Quiet fireside chatter in soft waves, lawn chairs creak, lightning bugs waltz in the trees

Soon all are deep asleep dreaming of another day in paradise
